Speedy Route now supports what3words addressing

In addition to the existing address geocoding (e.g. street addresses, town and city names, zip code, post codes etc.), Speedy Route now also fully supports what3words addresses as well.

what3words addresses are short memorable three word phrases that pinpoint co-ordinates anywhere in the world without the difficulty of remembering or typing latitude & longitude co-ordinates. w3w addresses are now included on the Export tab, and can also be typed into Location Address text boxes, or Bulk Imported.

Address Type-ahead and Bulk Import improvements

We are constantly working in the background to improve Speedy Route and regularly apply small changes and improvements to the website.

Following our recent migration to Mapbox services we have made several improvements to the location Address Resolution (also known as address geocoding) within Speedy Route that provides the 'confirmed' addresses as you manually type in or bulk import addresses.

We have made improvements in Speedy Route's infrastructure over and above that provided to us by Mapbox, so that the address resolution should be quicker and more reliable. You should now see extra suggestions in the dropdown list of matching addresses as you type, and Bulk Import should be improved as well.

As always, we're happy to hear any feedback from our customers!

Migration to Mapbox Services and Brexit Price Changes

In our previous blog post we mentioned that some of the Google services that Speedy Route is built on now have different licensing terms than in previous years.

Commercial websites such as Speedy Route have to pay to use Google's services by purchasing an (expensive) license, and we have done so annually for the 3 years we've been online (since 2013). Google's new license terms monitor usage of interactive websites such as Speedy Route in a different way than previously, such that the license is 'used up' much more quickly than before. In fact, this year's licence was used up in just 3 weeks instead of lasting a full year, even though Speedy Route had not changed.

Google Maps has been a large part of Speedy Route's story over the last 3 years, and we couldn't have got this far without them. However, Google's new licensing terms are prohibitively expensive, and we would have to at least double our prices (e.g. to $100+ for a monthly subscription) to continue using Google Services.

Speedy Route is therefore pleased to announce we have now migrated to a new mapping platform, provided by Mapbox and OpenStreetMap technology. There should be very little difference to you, our customers, as the functionality and operation of Speedy Route remains exactly the same as before. The displayed map now looks slightly different as it is a Mapbox map and not a Google one. The only casualty is Real Time traffic calculations, which we can no longer offer as Mapbox does not currently provide this information, but this may change in the future.

We have also taken this opportunity to update our British Pound Sterling prices in the wake of Brexit to match our U.S. Dollar subscription prices (which have not changed). As a U.S. corporation our costs are in Dollars, and we occasionally adjust our international prices to match.

Our subscriptions are still excellent value at £38 or $46.50 per month, and we hope the 'peek behind the scenes' above shows how we keep working hard at Speedy Route to provide you with a competitively priced service.

If you have any comments or questions about the new look Speedy Route, please feel free to contact us by email or on Twitter.

Free Route Calculations Limited To One Per 24 Hours

Speedy Route is built on top of several commercial Google services, and due in part to some recent licensing changes, we have now reduced the number of free route calculations offered by Speedy Route to one free route calculation for each visitor, per rolling 24 hour period.

This means visitors can still calculate an optimal route of up to 12 locations in Speedy Route for free, but will then have to wait for 24 hours until another free route calculation can be made.

There is no change to our paid service however. Customers who purchase a Speedy Route subscription can continue to make an unlimited number of optimal route calculations, with each route containing up to 500 locations.

Our subscriptions are fantastic value, starting at just $8.50 for 48 hours' access to unlimited route calculations, or $46.50 for monthly access, so purchase your Speedy Route subscription today!

Route Calculation using Real Time Live Traffic Flow

Speedy Route has always calculated the best optimal route between your route's locations. However until now, the route calculated has not taken into account the time of day you will be travelling.

We're very pleased to announce that Speedy Route can now optionally calculate routes taking into account the current real-time live traffic conditions, as reported by Google Maps. When the 'Consider Live Traffic Flow' option is checked, Speedy Route calculates the route to be optimal in the current road traffic.

'Consider Live Traffic Flow' option

Please see our new blog article for more details, and an example of a 'Consider Live Traffic Flow' route calculation.

Start and Finish your Speedy Route at different locations

One of the most asked for features in Speedy Route by our customers has always been the ability to set a specific Finish Location for the route, that is different from the Start Location.

We are very happy to announce that this feature is now available in Speedy Route for immediate use by all of our customers! The feature is accessed via the new radio button options at the bottom of the route location list:

Finish Location Options in Speedy Route

Ensure the 'Finish Location' checkbox is checked, and then select the 'Other Location' radio button. You can then type in the address below that your route will finish at (and this can be different from the Start Location).

With these options set, Speedy Route will calculate a route that starts at your 'Start Location', finishes at the 'Finish Location', and visits all the route locations in between in the best order.

You can still select to finish at the start location if required by selecting 'Return to Start Location', and this will produce a looped route. Alternatively, uncheck 'Finish Location' entirely if the finish location of the route is not important.

Please see our updated blog post Speedy Route Tips and Tricks #3 for more details.
